La Antigua Aduana

Old Customs Building (San José)

Once used as the customs center of San José, this building was declared a National Heritage site on June 4, 1980, and is owned by the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sports. It was once intended to be used as an exhibition center, but after many years of no activity this year the old customs building has been renovated to house an expositions and cultural center.

The Antigua Aduana represents Costa Rican architecture and culture at its best, showing off its beautiful brick exterior, soaring ceilings, round windows, and old charm, while providing the perfect backdrop for art shows, cultural fairs, and any other event that chooses the building for its location.

Though San José has long been regarded as merely a pass-through point for both residents and tourists, the Antigua Aduana revamp is a sure indicator of San José’s future as a hip, cultural destination. The city has made great headway in establishing itself as a capital full of culture and arts—hosting the International Cow Parade, the International Arts Festival, and many other events—and looks forward to future interest in its planned fairs, activities, and art shows.
