Liverpool Cathedral Time table:

• 1901 - The decision is made to build a great Cathedral for the recently formed Diocese of Liverpool. Giles Gilbert Scott, then 22-years-old, won the competition to be the architect.

• 1904 - The Foundation stone is laid by King Edward VII.

• 1910 - Lady Chapel is completed and used for worship.

• 1924 - The High Altar, Chancel and the Eastern Transepts are consecrated. They formed the first section of the main Cathedral, built to serve a city and a world changed by the horrors of World War I. The young architect then changed his mind over the design, abandoning plans for two towers and instead opting for one massive tower over a wonderfully wide central space.

• 1941 - The finished second phase of the Cathedral under the tower is used for the first time.

• (1939 - 1945) - During World War II work continued slowly, and in a city where many buildings were severely damaged by enemy bombs, miraculously the Cathedral escaped almost unscathed. One bomb actually penetrated into the roof space but was deflected and exploded in the street outside. The windows on the river side of the building were severely effected.

• 1978 - Queen Elizabeth II attended the dedication of the West end of the Cathedral. The building is now complete!
