The Physic Garden at Hitchin Museum is named after the Hitchin millionaire, physician and chemist: William Ransom, who founded a pharmaceutical chemist in Bancroft. Its borders are laid out with medicinal plants and herbs that were used for preparations in the chemist shop in the early 19th Century. There are 100 different species of plants, divided into categories – external ailments, internal ailments, household and culinary. The central feature is a bronze sundial of unusual design - a chemist's pestle and mortar. The sun refused to put in an appearance on the day I visited the garden, so I was not able to check the accuracy of this splendid timepiece.
