Astronomy elevates our minds, our spirits, and our eyes. In Cincinnati the eyes of astronomers have been elevated to the heavens for more than a century and a half at the Ormsby MacKnight Mitchel Cincinnati Observatory. Known as the Merz and Mahler 11" Refractor, the telescope was commissioned in 1842 by the founder of the Cincinnati Observatory, Ormsby MacKnight Mitchel, a Professor at Cincinnati College. Built in Munich, Bavaria and installed at the Cincinnati Observatory in 1845 it was, at the time, the 2nd largest telescope in the world. It's hand made wooden barrel holds an 11" flint and crown glass achromatic doublet objective lens with a focal length of 193 inches. This f/15.5 astronomical refractor has been in regular use for over 160 years. It stands today as the oldest professional telescope in the Western Hemisphere that is still in use.

Equipment

The source photographs were taken with a Nikon D40x with a Nikon 10.5mm fisheye lens. A Nodal Ninja 3 pan head was used on a modified Bogen 3000 tripod. The panorama is composed of 2 full panoramas and several flat photographs assembled into a pano montage using PTGUI and Photoshop CS3.
