The Caen Hill 'Flight' of 16 locks was designed by the engineer John Rennie & built between 1801-1810. It ascends 237 ft in 2 miles at a gradient of 1 in 44. Derelict by 1950 it has been restored by enthusiasts and is now used extensively by narrow boater owners. Thanks to CBJ for suggesting the site for the 'elevation' panos & BV for first bringing it to my attention in 2006.
