Weather permitting, Dunstable Downs provides a vantage point for a stunning panoramic view westwards over the airfield at the London Gliding Club and beyond into Buckinghamshire. The air was particularly clear on this day, though the wind was so strong and gusty that very few gliders were airborne. The up currents created by the action of the westerly wind on the hillside make it easy to stay aloft for hours, flying to and fro between Whipsnade and Dunstable. No doubt this was a key factor in the choice of the site for the club.
