This is the view from the observation tower in Shawnee Mission Park, the largest park in Johnson County, Kansas, and the most visited park in the state. Despite the appearance of this platform, the rest of the 1,250 acre park is beautiful and well-maintained. I actually like the graffiti on the tower - it looks like a piece of art.

Kansas may look flat from this elevated perspective, but the road that loops through the interior of the park, and around it's 120-acre lake, is quite hilly, and the north entrance is via the infamous Ogg Road, a short, but lung-busting climb for all but the fittest cyclists! I'm lucky to live near the park and I can be found here once a week or so.

I often use the park for trips to the large off-leash area for dogs. It's one of my dog Smudge's favorite places to go. The park also has a network of Horse riding trails and Mountain biking trails. There is also a Marina for sailing and canoeing as well as a swimming beach. SMP is a popular spot for fishing and having picnics too.
