Orange Wave Over Basel
Basel, Switzerland
Saturday, June 21, around 9.05 pm local time (19.05 UTM)
One of the highlights in Basel was the quarterfinal match between the Dutch and the Russian National Soccer Teams that took place here on June 21. The city was taken over by a huge orange wave of Oranje fans (highly elevated number of Dutch in Basel). Unfortunately I did not have time to go for a real bath in the wave, but just took one quick hand-held panorama when crossing the bridge at sunset (actually it was a little too dark already for a hand-held pano - the pano is lacking sharpness but anyway gives an impression of the atmosphere). The river banks were packed with fans enjoying the warm summer evening, drinking a lot of beer, and watching the match on the big screens mounted on the bridge.
(Fortunately the Dutch started the party early in the day, otherwise they may have missed it as in the end the Russians kicked them out of the tournament scoring 3:1 in the very last minutes of the match – see also Andrey Ilyin’s contribution)
