"The Whispering Wall", Barossa Reservoir, South Australia

On the 31st December 1901 'The Whispering Wall' was completed. The radical design was applauded by world engineers and articles praising the construction appeared in international publications. Built as one sector of a perfect circle with an elevation of twenty-seven metres the concrete wall, although ten metres wide at the base, tapers at the top to a narrow pathway.

The Barossa Reservoir, now a crucial storage facility in this drought-ridden state of South Australia, is also a haven for many species of bird-life. Natural bush surrounds the reservoir and offers protection to native wildlife such as emus and western-grey kangaroos.

Visitors are attracted mostly by the dam's famous audio-bounce that turns a whisper into a normal tone. The parabola effect causes sound-waves to bounce in a series of straight jumps across the one hundred and forty-four metre curve, making conversation easy between people standing on the lookouts on either side.
