As most of you know already, Landis, Don and Patrick decided to organize a conference at the same time as the WWP (As if they didn't have enough going on already). As a spouse, friend, and treasurer I offered my support. Which, for the conference, ended up being making sure our group of field trippers made it to the "Rock" on our field trip day.
As a resident of the area, it's only fitting that I've been here almost all my life and never been out to visit and learn about Alcatraz. (I've also not walked across the Golden Gate bridge, but I did try; the noise of the passing traffic killed my ears.) As a field trip option for the IVRPC, Landis and I volunteered to lead the group out to the island, or at least get us to the ferry to go out to the island.
We ended up a pack of photographers storming the island on a brisk day. The fog was just coming in and it was truly windy. The sun was in and out that afternoon.
We met a very a nice Parks volunteer, named Cole, who got us out of the stream of guests taking the walking audio tour and took us on a private tour of the A–block and hospital both of which are not normally open to the public (sometimes it helps to travel in packs). This is my only time during the conference for VR photographers that I actually had a camera with a tripod to hand.
This is the pharmacy for the inmates of Alcatraz. Not something you really think of when mulling community over in your mind. It is, however, a fixture in most communities. Everyone needs drugs once in a while.
