Generations of Streatham villagers were buried in the graveyard of St Leonard's parish church, but in the 1840s the graveyard was almost full with little space for new internments. To offset the loss of burial space the church obtained a new site at Tooting, and Streatham Cemetery was opened in 1892.
Today, Streatham Cemetery is administered by the London borough of Lambeth which holds records of burials and cremations dating from 1893.
An excellent collection of photos and interactive animated images of Streatham Cemetery taken throughout the four seasons of the year can be seen here.
