Coral Reef Community in Schoenbrunn
Vienna Zoo, Schoenbrunn, Hietzing, Vienna, Austria
June 21, 2007 - 14:10 MEST
A reef aquarium with a volume of 80,000 liters (!). Including the filter basins and skimmers, more than 90 cubic meters of seawater are circulating at any one time. The entire water volume is pumped through the biological filter once every hour. 13 HQI spotlights and bluish neon lights with a total power of 22,000 watts flood the basin in tropical sunlight.
Ten tons of "living" stone, inhabited by organisms, were used to set up this aquarium. Nearly two hundred animal species currently reside here. The living reef is dominated by different species of soft corals along with zoanthids and anemones. Stony corals were introduced in January 2002 and have been doing well.
