Like many gardens here, the pictured vegetable garden of my father-in-law started its life in his basement under artificial light in February and March, a time of the year when the ground is still frozen and covered by an average of five feet (150cm) of snow.
The move from the basement to the ground is a long and delicate one. Due to the harsh and variable meteorological conditions, not many vegetables can be transferred into the ground before mid June.
The growing season is short here and people try to take advantage of it as much as they can. In late September the cold will be back and by October it will wipe out most traces of the beautiful or useful gardens they prepared, so they have to start it all over again each year.
