Shaped Garden

The Lady of Elche (Dama de Elche) found by chance in La Alcudia (Elche countryside) in 1897, has come back for a visit (May 18th – November 1st) to the town where it was discovered. This famous stone sculpture that dates from the 5th or 4th century b.C. represents a priestess bust and is the most important piece of the Iberian art.

Soon after its finding, the Lady of Elche was acquired by the Louvre Museum (Paris) where it was exposed until 1941, when it was recovered by the Spanish Administration after hard negotiations. From that date, the sculpture has been shown in the Prado Museum first, and in the National Archaeological Museum since 1972 (both in Madrid). The Lady of Elche has just visited its home town twice, in 1965 and in the current year 2006.

The decision to loan the statue for the inauguration of the new Archaeological and History Museum of Elche in 2006, has become an extraordinary event for the city. For this reason, a great number of replicas have been spaced all over Elche. This pano shows one such replica made of plants and flowers, a garden Dama. A crystal mosaic representation of her face can also be seen at the back.
