My small village garden is on the very outskirts of an old Cypriot village.
The village consists of the old and the new, where the Greek and Turkish Cypriots still live together in harmony, and in recent years many British and more recently other’s from mainland Europe have decided to make this area their home. So we have an eclectic mix of housing and lifestyles.
A typical old village house would maybe have a covered courtyard – often the cover consists of very old grape vines and sweet smelling Jasmine - where the family spends most of the summer months, cooking eating and socializing as a family group.
My house is typical of the type built mainly for the influx of recent arrivals. However the garden consists of my old and new, my past and my future. Statues, birdbath and planters belong to my past life in the UK and bring with them memories of that time and place - Cold spring and summer BBQ’s sitting out under the stars. The rest is my recent past and my future. The lemon tree on the patio, the orange and a grapefruit trees and the other plants and trees, borders dotted with herbs in amongst the flowers, many donated by my new found friends – In fact the outdoor space, where we enjoy such wonderful times.
