Picturesque full selfsupporting garden along an old dyke, part of an historic inundation defence-line.

Here you are on the edge of a inundation system. The Dutch are famous for there everlasting struggle against the water. In 1589 however the idea developed to make this water an ally. Instead of the usual system to defend city seperately, the plan was to protect larges areas simultaniously again hostile attacks. By being able to flood large amounts of land, the enemy would have a hard time to reach the cities. Behind the dyke is a little river called the "Linge". Just 700 meters from here lies one of the fortresses of the defence line "Fort Asperen". We were just passing by on our bicyles when we spotted this picturesque garden. It has all the plants herbes and trees you need to be selfsupporting and share a lot with your neighbours. I saw a walnuttree and a appletree, and just about everywhere I looked along the dyke something was planted. It looks all so fragile and ancient. It feld like this will not last for very long. Maybe however because it is part of the defence line it is part of protected area.
