Theme
The theme I have chosen for my panorama is water sport.Surfing is a popular water sport you would not expect in Munich, hundreds of kilometers away from the next coast line.
Trivia
The location is at the Eisbach, which translates to ice brook just next to the Haus der Kunst in Munich. The standing wave can be surfed the whole year, but the water is always very cold. The history of surfing the Eisbach goes back into the year 1972 (according to this site).
The Eisbach flows under ground for some kilometers and is a part of the Isar river. After the popular surf spot it flows through the Englischer Garten a large park where you can relax just in the heart of the city.
The surfing is not allowed at the Eisbach and the sign you can see in the panorama reads:
ACHTUNG!
Das Einhängen von Gegenständen
zum Zwecke des Wellenreitens
und Surfens ist streng verboten
LEBENSGEFAHR!
This roughly translates to:
ATTENTION!
Hooking in objects
for the purpose of surfing
is strictly forbidden
DANGER OF LIFE!
This refers to the early times when surfers used a leash they connected to the bridge and their surfboard.
When you take a close look in the panorama you find a leash still hanging in the water. But nowadays I have not seen anybody using a leash.
