The first resorts opened at Warm Springs in the 1750s. Among those who came seeking relief from various ailments in the 98-degree F. water was Thomas Jefferson.
In 1766, a resort opened at nearby Hot Springs; it was named The Homestead. The Homestead today is a luxury destination of breathtaking size and grandeur. In addition to The Homestead Spa, it features championship golf, fine dining and other recreational pursuits.
The original pool of mineral-rich waters that attracted people to Hot Springs has been restored. That's it behind the low, white fence in the formal gardens. Nearby, a young woman in a long gown poses for a photographer.
The Homestead has been attracting guests for nearly 250 years. And it all started because of warm water.
