This location is significant because of the crucial importance of water to the state of California. The New Foresthill Bridge was built to span the Auburn Dam Reservoir which was to have been completed in 1983. It purpose was to provide flood protection for the city of Sacramento, water for cities and farms, power for the state's energy grid and recreation for pleasure boaters. The Auburn Dam would have been the largest concrete dam in the world, but its construction was postponed indefinitely because of seismic safety concerns.
The debate over the dam continues to this day. For more information please follow this link... http://www.faultline.org/place/2002/10/auburn1.html
