River construction by "SAMURAI"

About 250 years ago.

"MINO area(Noubi Plain)" people was afflicted by the flood. Because three big rivers (KISO, NAGARA, IBI) flow together in this area.

Therefore, the " EDO Bakufu (EDO Government=Tokyo)" ordered to the " SATUMA Han(SATUMA State=Kagoshima Kyushu)" to perform river construction. " SATUMA SAMURAI " 950 persons and the people of this district is 2000 persons gathered.

It was very difficult construction. The " SATUMA Han " is located in the about 1100km(680mile) far away on this place. The cost of "3millionRYOU"(about 20million US dollars) was spent. There was also the purpose of the " EDO Bakufu " weakens the power of the " SATUMA Han ".

After 1 year and 6 months, construction ended. And 1000 pines were planted in this ground. Thay suffered troubles the sickness,flood,and bullying of government. This ground became a rich granary area by a lot of sacrifices of the person. (Suicide for protest sake and responsibility - 53 persons, Death due to sickness - 33 persons)

After this place began to be called "SENBON MATSUBARA". The meaning "Field of 1000 pines"

Recently many pines suffered damage by insect, and it was cut. A new small pine was planted beside the stump of a old pine. The young pines was send from SATUMA(KAGOSHIMA). Over 250 years passed. The friendly relations with SATUMA continue.
