This harbor was named Golden Stairs because of the granite blocks used to shore up the roadway at the turn of the (20th) century. Steamboats & sailing vessels would come up the coast from Boston & NY to exchange cargo and bring "vacationers" to the many inns & lodges (long gone) along the coast. One such lodge was at the head of the harbor. Now it is hard for any "working townfolk" to be able to find a harbor/landing that they can use to work from because the vast majority of the costal property has been bought by "private owners" which will not allow any working (lobster) fishermen to use their facilities. Our town of Brooksville has established The Golden Stairs Harbor with a "public" landing and float. This allows the a few local lobster-fisher-folk one of the few remaining places to work from. It is a foggy overcast day but the lobster boats are comming in to get their traps to set out for the season. To catch the (famous) Maine Lobster!! The next harbor over (Bucks Harbor) is "home" to (the private) Bucks Harbor Yacht Club and is closed to local folk. It is a catch-22 -- visitors & land "investors" come to Vacationland (Maine) for all the (natural) qualities and way of life that their presence and attitudes are causing to be destroyed.... It is a small world folks.... remember... where ever you go... "tread lightly" (attitudes included)-- bring respect -- leave few footprints -- & take only memories.... Remember -- We should think & be Stewards for future generations --Not Owners which exploit this generation!
