The Alster is a 56 km long river in Northern Germany, which flows through the city of Hamburg. The Alster ends in the river Elbe. The Alster forms two artificial lakes within the city limits of Hamburg, called Außenalster (outer Alster) and Binnenalster (inner Alster). Until the 19th century the river alster was used for transports by ships and the gates were used for controlling the water level.
