1,400 year old Monastic Site in Ireland

Skellig Michael is one of two UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Republic of Ireland. This small island of 18 hectares (44 acres) towers 218 m (714 ft.) out of the Atlantic Ocean. It is located 12 km (8 miles) off Valencia on the south-west coast of Ireland.

Its remoteness and rugged coastline made it an ideal location for the early Christian monastic settlement which dates back 1,400 years. Skellig Michael is one of the best preserved early Christian island monasteries in the world. Six stone 'Bee Hive' huts surround two 'boat shaped' oratories. There are some 2,300 steps on the island.

This is a sacred and unique site and has experienced caretakers stationed on the island throughout the summer season. Licences for boats which can land on the island are strictly controlled in order to preserve its delicate structure.

Taken with a Nikon D100 and Nikkor 10.5mm Fisheye Lens. Exposure - Manual 1/100 sec - f16. White Balance locked. Files saved in RAW format. Manfrotto 302 Plus Panoramic Head. Stitched in PTMac (Kekus) and blended in 'XBlend' (Kekus) Cleaned up in Photoshop (Adobe). Converted to Cubic VR in CubicConverter (ClickHere Design)
