I have lived in Flagstaff for 20 years and never knew this preserve existed. It is 478 acres HIDDEN behind an industrial part of town between a sewage treatment plant, two gravel pits, an industrial storage yard, the fire department training facility, and a natural gas pipeline station. The city purchased the land and added an access path with parking.
The Picture Canyon Natural and Cultural Preserve is located around an offshoot of the Rio de Flag seasonal waterway and encompasses an area Ponderosa Pine Second Growth forest, hiking trails, the ruins of a historic train trestle from the 1908 logging era, the ruins of a small Northern Sinagua Pithouse from 700-1300 AD and 800 associated pictographs on the area boulders and rock walls.
This panorama was shot from the rim of the Picture Canyon part of the Rio de Flag, just below a small waterfall between the train trestle and the pithouse.
