A Tall Tree With A Tall Tale

Trees over hundreds of years grow to the majestic, tall specimens you see here. They stand and watch time and weather pass them, year after year, season after season. But with height comes the risk of high winds and snow bending and flexing the tree, sometimes to its limits. Over time this tree has lost a branch or two but is still standing strong.

This tree also has another Tall to tell, a tall tale. You see, this tree was the subject of my first spherical panorama I shot back in August 1999. Creating panoramas has changed, back then my first experiment was shot on 35mm film, using a normal tripod, photos printed and scanned and then assembled using command line tools and configuration file.

Much has changed over this time, both with the tree and my creation of panoramas. But the tree I hope will stand for years to come, and I'll be creating panoramas for as long as I'm enjoying it, too.

Taken with a Nikon D300 and a Nikkor 10.5mm f/2.8G fisheye lens. Mounted on a Nodal Ninja 5 panorama head and R-D16 rotator atop a Manfrotto 055XPROB tripod. Shots taken at 6 positions 60° apart, tilted 15° down, and another shot taken looking straight up. Raw files then processed in darktable v3.8.1 before being stitched together using PTGui 10.0.19 Pro and converted using Pano2VR 6.1.15 pro.
