Looking at the old gasometer near the river Dreisam in Freiburg you might ask: Is this really tall? There is one association that springs to mind, when hearing tall: slim.

And the old gasometer for sure is not exactly slim!

But I would argue it is tall and the inhabitants of the houses on the other side of the gasometer would presumably consent. Its height is 40 m – the diameter of the globe 33.76 m.

The old village of Betzenhausen – now part of Freiburg – is located on the other side of the gasometer. Next to it are gardens and two-storey houses. The steep roof is usually used for apartments too. But even so, those houses are no higher than 12 m.

There is an old Baroque church in the center of Betzenhausen – only about 250 m from the gasometer, but its spire of this old will by no means reach 40 m in height (my estimation: around 20 m).

So yes, the Betzenhausen Gasometer is a grumpy, tall structure.

Background facts: Built in 1964, started operation in 1965, end of operation in 2019. Gas-pressure while in operation, 700 to 720 kPa.

Currently, there are plans to keep the gasometer as an industry monument.
