After 70 years of continuous service with the United States Air Force, the iconic SHAPE of the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress bomber has made it perhaps the most recognizable aircraft ever to fly. Of the original 744 bombers produced, 58 are still operated by USAF active forces, with another 18 in reserve. They are projected to serve into the 2050s. The B-52 in this panorama is on display at the National Museum of Nuclear Science and History in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Other recognizable SHAPES seen in the panorama are a duplicate of the 100ft tall steel tower used for the Trinity nuclear bomb test on July 16, 1945 near Alamogordo, New Mexico, a Boeing B-29 Superfortress of the WWII era with a yellow Fat Man atomic bomb casing partially visible beneath the tail section, a 280 mm M-65 atomic cannon with its transporter, a B-47 Stratojet bomber, and the sail from the decommissioned nuclear submarine USS James K. Polk.
