So how do you turn a pedestrian footbridge into a work of art? Well just add darkness. As the sun sets it comes alive with its own clever lighting and not just the bridge but the approaches too. This provides people with an illuminated walkway that appears to go on forever. Even drivers passing below get provided with an interesting sight of the bridge glowing above their heads as they whiz below.
The ring road network around Worcester is being expanded and this new bridge forms part of the work. With there soon being a dual carriageway passing below the old pedestrian crossing just would not be up to the job and safety would become a risk. But it is not just for pedestrians, it is for cyclists too. With its gently sloping approaches and wide and smooth deck there is plenty enough space for everyone to use it.
The whole process of building the bridge has been in the public eye. Not wanting to disrupt the flow of traffic on this important thoroughfare the bridge itself was built to the side and then craned into place over a weekend, which itself was a sight to be seen. I cannot vouch for how busy it is during the daytime but when I have visited in the evening, you'll usually see at least another photographer wanting to capture its illuminated lines in their own unique ways.
