This winter there was quite a lot of snow in the Black Forest. The Kandel is one of the highest summits near Freiburg – 1241 m above sea level. Here the snowfall was particularly heavy.
This year we have had a very special situation on the Kandel. On the weekends many people visited the summit. The trails were full of people completely ignoring the social distancing rules that are in place due to Covid. As a consequence, the authorities closed down one of the two roads leading up to the summit. They also didn’t clear the snow off the trails and the parking lots. With the height of the snow of more than one meter there was no chance of walking around – very few people do own snowshoes around here. And with even less parking lots – mainly reserved for the workers of a nearby construction site - there was no chance of parking your car.
Well, these new measures did work. When we drove up the Kandel to take the panorama, there were only a handful of people around to take photos of the sunrise.
