Near the end of March, Spring arrived in Bavaria, and I made a late afternoon car trip around the area. I had two possible spots in mind for this WWP event: the concrete building of the Amberg Glassworks factory (the late architect Gropius’ latest work, 1970), or the Autobahn bridge at Unterrieden. Well, I couldn’t get close enough to the Glassworks factory for a nice panorama, and the Autobahn bridge was at least half an hour by car.

Since boredom loves company, I invited a friend to come along, and he (not being preoccupied by driving the car) spotted this concrete surprise at the railroad bridge at the town of Henfenfeld, population 1900, near Nuremberg, Germany.

It is uncommon to see artwork on such usually mundane utilitarian concrete structures, even less so to find one this size. The architect went to the trouble of getting a die of the lettering and the emblem, to have it mounted to the bridge's mould to create a durable decoration instead of plain flat concrete surfaces.
