The “Stundensäule” (translates roughly to “Hour pillar”) by the road from Amberg to Schwandorf is an old distance marker for travelers. Back in the days of carriages, distances were given in hours not kilometers, hence the name. Occasionally separate values were given for the stage coaches and other, slower means of traveling.
This particular example is quite weathered and has seen its share of “artists” leaving their marks in the sandstone, to the point where the original writing is only partially decipherable.
