Cruzin' Route 66 in a 66 Mustang*. Traveling America the 1960's way.

This piece of Route is original pavement from the early 1940s. It served as the main road to California from then until the mid-'80s when it was replaced by Interstate 40 (just to the North) and relegated to be a dead-end frontage road.

This particular section's 10 minutes of fame occurred in 1969 when it was used in the movie "Easy Rider" where Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper travel from Los Angeles to New Orleans in search of America. During WWII, this piece of 66 fronted Camp Navajo (then known as Navajo Ordnance Depot) which served as the major US storage and shipping depot for munitions headed for the Pacific Theater. Post WWII, this piece of concrete carried millions of Americans during the post-war population shift to Southern California during the great American love-affair with the automobile.

Truly, travel in America ('60s style).
