At 77 feet high and 260 feet wide, the Great falls are the second tallest in the United States. It was here in 1791 that Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton envisioned using waterpower to manufacture goods in the United States. A series of canals, raceways and spillways were built to power the new factories and America’s first planned industrial city quickly grew. Today you can still see waterpower being used by the operational hydroelectric plant to the left of the falls.
In 2009 the Great Falls and the surrounding area were designated a National Historic Park.
