The Franz Josef (Ka Roimata o Hinehukatere in Māori) is a 12 km (7.5 mi) long glacier located in Westland Tai Poutini National Park on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. Together with the Fox Glacier 20 km (12 mi) to the south, it is unique in descending from the Southern Alps to less than 300 metres (980 ft) above sea level, amidst the greenery and lushness of a temperate rainforest.

Due to the specific weather on the west coast - a lot of rain - and the glacier's decent, there are huge changes in the length and height of the glacier. Whereas it shrinks on average, there have until recently been periods of the glacier advancing again.

Walking to the face of the glacier, you can actually watch the ice melting away. The place this picture was taken was covered by the glacier aprox. 100 years ago.
