From just a few plants native to an empty lot across the street, I collected a handful of Bluebonnet seeds almost three DECADES ago and scattered them in a sunny area of our yard where the lawn was struggling with the summer heat. We were pleased the next spring with the appearance of the first of continuing yearly displays of Lupinus Texensis, the State Flower of Texas. A hardy winter annual, Bluebonnets sprout in November and grow quite slowly through the Texas winters, easily surviving an occasional covering of ice and snow. The characteristic blue flowers appear in March and are densely arranged on a white tipped spike. They last for several weeks before producing seed pods which ripen, pop open, and scatter in May to prepare for the next year's display.
