These railroad tracks are remnants of the industrial past of my homecity "Essen" (Home of Krupp). In the industrial influenced past of this region transport routes were very important. In the beginning towpaths along the river Ruhr and later the railroad were used for transportation of industrial goods. But times change, the coal and iron industry declined, people have more leisure time (not always wanted by them).

This free time is not only used for watching TV. And so (about 25 years ago) the old towpaths were altered to bike paths. Nowadays the same happens to the railway lines that are no longer needed. They are also by and by changing to bike paths. That will happen later this year at this point too.
