Greatness Comes from Breaking Limits

This is the area that lead to the birth of Chicago and it is believed that it may have been used as far back as 7,000 years ago. Pre-history thru modern history were all effected by this small area of land. From ancient trappers and hunters, to Father Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet and beyond, this area was used as a portage until the late 1800s. During the Revolutionary War both American and British troops used the Chicago Portage. The portage linked Lake Michigan with the Mississippi River and, by extension, the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. So why select this for the “Limits” theme? When man ignores his limits what he can accomplish is only limited by his imagination.

This larger-than-life steel sculpture is dedicated to Jacques Marquette, Louis Jolliet and their American Indian guide.

The area is surrounded by commercial businesses, oil storage and the like. It's also one of the few remaining historical locations from Chicago's early history and probably the last place you can walk in the footsteps of the people who founded and settled the heart of America.
