With 2,132,112 sq feet of retail space Garden State Plaza is one of the United States' largest shopping malls. Shortly after the mall opened in 1957, The Borough of Paramus enacted “Blue Laws” that restrict the days the mall can operate. These laws were created out of fear that mall traffic could cause high levels of congestion on the local highways and streets. There have been many attempts to repeal these laws but they all have failed.
