Sacred Canyon in the Flinders Ranges of South Australia is the site of some of the oldest rock engravings (called petroglyphs) in Australia. The rocks contain the engravings which were made by the Adnyamathanha People who lived in the ranges. If you look carefully at the rock walls of the Canyon you will see some of these engravings.

Circles represent water holes, horse shoes represent campfires, and arrows represent emus or kangaroos. These images relate to the Creation Period and the stories of the Dreamtime which form the basis of Aboriginal spiritual beliefs.

Aboriginal people have no written history but believe that the Dreamtime was about 40,000 years ago. This also happens to be the limit of how far back in time carbon dating can measure so these rock engravings are at least 40,000 years old.
