The Former Derby Canal Junction at Swarkestone

The Derby Canal, engineered by Benjamin Outram, opened in 1796. The entire Derby Canal was closed in 1964 and left to decay. Some sections of the former canal were turned into cycle routes. Currently this is the limit of travel down the Derby Canal from Swarkestone.

The Derby Canal used to run beneath the bridge I am standing on. This canal bridge is known as an accommodation bridge. It was extensively restored by the Waterways Recovery Group and the Derby and Sandiacre Canal Society. The small section of canal you can see here is all that remains of the Derby Canal that is actually "still in water." Here at Swarkestone is where the Derby Canal used to connect with the Trent and Mersey Canal System.

Swarkestone boat club resides in the Toll house, which is the only surviving Derby Canal Company building, this was the toll point for boats navigating from the Trent and Mersey Canal to the Derby Canal.

The Derby and Sandiacre Canal Society has great plans to restore this canal.
