This naturally sunken one hectare Victorian garden designed by James Matthews was officially opened to the public in 1877. The garden remained very popular throughout much of the 20th Century, but in recent times, however, the gardens have become neglected, underused, underfunded and a shadow of their former glory.
Aberdonians have recently been involved in a consultation exercise on a possible future project for Union Terrace Gardens.
City Square, as the proposed project is known, is being spearheaded by Aberdeen City and Shire Economic Future. Under the terms of the plans, these beautiful historic gardens would disappear forever, the space would be concreted over, raising it to street level thus creating a gigantic bland, concrete civic square, similar to any other large city in the world.
