The Hawaiian word Kōkua means "to help."
Kōuka Market, a cooperative grocery store in Honolulu, has been helping member/owners help themselves since 1970.
I’ve been a member/owner for several years. My favorite part of the store is the produce section, with a selection of local and consciously-raised foods. Membership is voluntary and open to anyone, but you don’t have to be a member to shop at Kōkua. Benefits range from discounts at the store to credit union and car insurance eligibility.
From the site:
“Our products are quality, minimally processed, natural foods with a strong emphasis on organically grown foods... We currently have an owner database of over 2,700 people, 1,500 of which are fully invested owners. Our owners reflect the wonderfully diverse culture of Hawai‘i and the greater Honolulu area.”
