If there was ever a book that documented the diversity of the English language, then this is it. Released to the public in 1852 by Dr. Peter Mark Roget, Roget's Thesaurus is the widely-used English thesaurus.In the foreword of the first edition he wrote:
"It is now nearly fifty years since I first projected a system of verbal classification similar to that on which the present work is founded. Conceiving that such a compilation might help to supply my own deficiencies, I had, in the year 1805, completed a classed catalogue of words on a small scale, but on the same principle, and nearly in the same form, as the Thesaurus now published."
The first edition contained some 15,000 words, which has since grown considerably.
Unfortunately in 1869 while on holiday in West Malvern, Worcestershire, he died, aged 90.
Equipment
Taken with a Nikon D300 and a Nikkor 10.5mm f/2.8G fisheye lens. Mounted on a Nodal Ninja 5 panorama head atop a Manfrotto 055XPROB tripod. Shots taken at 6 positions 60° apart, tilted 15° down and another shot taken looking straight up. Raw files then processed in Nikon CaptureNX 1.3 before being stitched together using PTGui Pro 8.1.2 / Smartblend 1.2.5 and converted to a QTVR Cube using Pano2VR 2.2.3.
