The gardens were initially created in 1857 by Marquis of Casa Loring and his wife and subsequently expanded by their second owners, the Echevarria-Echevarrieta family, who acquired the estate in 1911. They were officially declared Gardens of Historical and Artistic Importance in 1943. In 1990, they were taken over by the Malaga City Council. They were opened to the public on the 20th of June, 1994.
The landscape-style gardens are home to an exquisite open-air collection of tropical and subtropical flora. Around them, other gardens and botanical collections have been created with the aim of displaying some of the wide variety of plants to be found on our planet. There are currently over 1,000 tropical and subtropical species (100 varieties of palm tree) on display here, as well as some 200 autochthonous plants.
