Today tourism dominates the village activities with guest houses, hotels, restaurants and tea rooms catering for the every need of the thousands of tourists which descend upon the village every day throughout the year.
William Wordsworth, the famous poet and writer, spent many years of his life in Grasmere. Dove Cottage, the house where he lived, is now a very popular tourist attraction. The Jerwood Centre, recently opened adjacent to the cottage, has become the premier source of information for the study of Wordsworth and other British Romantic writers of the second half of the 18th century.
Along with the garden centre, bookshop and outdoor clothes shops, a visit to Grasmere isn't complete without popping into the Grasmere Gingerbread Shop. This tiny little shop makes gingerbread that has customers coming back year after year to savour its distinctive taste.
