These houses in Banstraat look highly similar and at the same time display a rich yet subtle diversity.

The houses numbered 4 - 6 (and 1 - 3, on the opposite side of the street) were built in 1903, the houses numbered 8 - 12 in 1905. The architect was L. van der Tas Dzn. and the builder P.H. Rieder (see: Atlas van de 19e eeuwse ring van Amsterdam, published by De Balie, 2004).

Without a doubt, the faces of the houses had identical color schemes originally, emphasizing similarity, but for many years now these houses have been painted in a cheerful, diverse and eclectic style.
