The panorama opens with a view on the "Romerhuis", who’s beginning was a long time ago. It was built in 1521 and it is named after the important family "Romer" in the 17th century. The style of the building is late Gothic.
Next to it you can see an area that is planned for the "Maasboulevard" project. During the week workers are busy with the building of the foundation. I always wonder how they get the foundation accurately aligned in such an irregular and muddy terrain. I think that they probably use some laserequipment or gps to get that done.
Before they started the work, archaeologists searched the site for ancient remains. They inspected the soil accurately and they got indeed a rich harvest.
Among these were a Roman helmet that was dated about the first century, 2064 pipe fragments that could be assembled to 356 pipe bowls and a jewesh bathing house in a rather good state from the 14th century.
Of course this delayed the work for some time and now the project is expected to be finished in 2010.
Then the Maasboulevard quarter is intended for cultural use, recreation and shopping.
While I was there I stood on a little cabin during shooting so that my camera was at some distance above the fence. Very handy that someone put this cabin there!
