Peering through a telescope on a clear, dark night and gazing towards the earliest points of light in time (emitted by the oldest stars billions of years ago) is a wonderful experience. The whole notion of being able to 'look back in time' still boggles my mind. Perhaps some day we may actually see 'The Beginning'.

The David Dunlap Observatory officially opened in 1935. Located in the once-remote town of Richmond Hill, its 74-inch reflecting telescope is still the largest in Canada. Within the administration building are three smaller domes containing additional instruments.

Today Richmond Hill has become a small city complete with light-polluted night skies. Despite this, the DDO has continued with ongoing research. Sadly its owner, the University of Toronto, has decided to sell this now-prime piece of real estate to the highest bidder.

Another piece of Canadian history soon to be replaced by more urban development.
