Osceola County was founded in 1887 and was named after the famous Seminole Indian war hero. A museum has been set up with original buildings that have been donated by families whose ancestors had built them. Descendants had lived in them up until the mid '90s at which time they were donated to the museum. The houses were/are called "Cracker" houses. This panorama was taken of the Tyson country store. Notice the Post Office at one end. This was built in Narcoossee in the 1880's. There are many items representative of the late 1800's on display. Cattle and steamboats played a major role in the county's early history. Steamboats? Yep, you can boat from Kissimmee's Lake Tohopekaliga, known locally as Lake Toho, all the way to either the Atlantic or the Gulf via Lake Okeechobee. Cattle were brought here by Spanish explorers in the 1500's, and are believed to be the first cattle ever to have set foot (or hoof) in North America. Cattle and citrus were major industries until just recent years when freezes and "progress" have taken a toll. Disney World has had a profound effect on Kissimmee as it is just down the road and is actually closer to Kissimmee than Orlando.
