The demands on a blacksmith have changed much over time. From the call for weapons of war to the rudiments of agriculture, the blacksmith has always had strong cultural relevance.

The Dane End Forge is as much a vibrant and cherished part of this idyllic, quintessentially English village setting now as it ever has been. With records citing the services of a blacksmith available in the village of Dane End since before 1629, the forge has flourished at its current location for more than one hundred and fifty years, serving the local rural and domestic communities alike.

Since January 1st 2004, Kathryn Fairhurst has brought hammer to anvil as Master blacksmith of the Dane End Forge, with a clear focus on striking up a unique balance between four centuries of local iron-craft tradition and an exciting contemporary style of her own. Honing her craft at The University of Derby, Kat has long had a creative bent designing furniture, lighting and jewellery from an early age.

You can view examples of Kat's contemporary metal work on the Metal Firefly website.
